Ames Public Library is in the process of planning for an expansion and renovation project. The goal of the project is to create a comfortable, flexible, and efficient space for Ames to learn, imagine, gather, and share in the 21st Century.

On November 8, 2011, the voters of Ames passed a $18 million bond referendum for the Library Renewal Project. Fundraising through donations and grants will add at least $2 million.

We've Moved!

In anticipation of the expansion and renovation of the current library building, Ames Public Library has moved to a temporary location in Lincoln Center at 620 Lincoln Way. See the mini-documentary here!  >>

Library Renewal Moving Forward

Ames Public Library's project to renovate and expand the building at 515 Douglas Avenue is moving along well. The Library Renewal Project, which is planned for completion in 2014, will increase the size of the library by 63% to about 78,000 square feet.

Library Renewal Project Construction

Take a walk by the site to get a glimpse what the renewed library will look like! The historic Carnegie library from 1904 and the 1940 addition on the north side and the brickwork from the 1984 addition on the south side frame what will be the new Farwell T. Brown Auditorium and the entryway. A second story is taking shape along the west side of the building above the area that used to house the adult fiction and nonfiction books, and the Bookmobile's new garage sits at the southern end of the alley.

Library staff have been working tirelessly with the architects to finalize details such as furnishings and equipment. There are also ongoing planning discussions about the move back into 515 Douglas Avenue and opening activities.

While construction continues, Ames Public Library's materials and services are available in its temporary location at 620 Lincoln Way (next to Hobby Lobby). The Bookmobile also makes weekly visits to neighborhoods throughout the community.
