The Women of Downton Abbey

Tuesday, April 16, 2013

8pm, ISU Memorial Union, Sun Room

Celebrate Women's History Month with a special presentation by Jessica Fellowes, bestselling author of The World of Downton Abbey and The Chronicles of Downton Abbey and the niece of Lord Julian Fellowes, who created and wrote the hit PBS series.

Jessica has extensively researched the people--in particular the women--of that period and has discovered fascinating and sometimes surprising parallels between the women of the early twentieth century and today.

While Jessica focuses on the characters, sets, and plot lines, she also discusses the sociohistorical context of the show, particularly as it relates to the changing role of women, the rise of technology, and the crumbling of class hierarchy in post-WWI Britain.

Sponsored by the Iowa State University Committee on Lectures; Carrie Chapman Catt Center; ISU's Departments of History, Women's and Gender Studies, and English; Margaret Sloss Women's Center; YWCA Ames-ISU; and Ames Public Library.
