Eli Cramblit, pioneer "horse doctor" and Ames resident since 1867, marketed his "King of Pain" medicine first as a horse liniment and later as a panacea for human ailments. This advertisement from the Times of September 3, 1896, lists the benefits claimed for the elixer. The adoption of the U. S. Food and Drug Administration regulations brought about the demise of this product because of its opium content.

This advertisement is from the September 10, 1896 Ames Times. Patients who came to see Dr. E. W. Murray during his stop at Ames' Davis House hotel were offered a healthcare plan for $5 a month, including medicines.
