In 1916, Iowa State College officially gave the engineering students and faculty the day off on St. Patrick's Day. (St. Patrick is the patron saint of engineers.) Following ceremonies in front of Central (later called Beardshear) Hall, the engineers brought their parade downtown to Main Street. Such events were merged with VEISHEA, beginning in 1922.
