State Gym was pressed into hospital service during the flu epidemic of 1918. This photo was taken when the first patients were brought to the gym after the college hospital's capacity had been exceeded. Later, canvas partitions were used between sections providing some privacy.

The State Gymnasium at ISC was converted into a hospital to accommodate the surge of influenza cases during the 1918-19 pandemic. Fifty-one deaths occured in an ISC student population of approximately 3,000.
