Alford Carleton (1903-1983), graduated from Ames High School in 1920 and from Oberlin College in 1924. He was a protege of Rev. Henry K. Hawley, the minister of the Congregational Church in Ames (1915-1935). After college, Carleton attended Hartford Seminary in Hartford, Connecticut and became a Congregationalist minister. He was the president of Aleppo College in Syria, a school which operated under the aegis of Congretational Church (now, the United Church of Christ, Congregational). Carleton was prominent in Congregational Church affairs and was vice-president of the National Council of Churches. (See also: 175.978.4-5 and 175.979.1-2)
