This 1959 Iowa Dept. of Transportation aerial is looking east from Sheldon Avenue at the area surrounding Lincoln Way, which bisects the photograph. In the bottom center (the north side of Lincoln Way) is the Lincoln Apartments building. Above that can be seen Clyde Williams Field, which was the Iowa State College/University playing field prior to the construction of the Jack Trice field and stadium on the south side of Lincoln Way between Beach Avenue and Elwood Drive. Above the Cyde Williams Field can be seen a number of dormitory buildings on the Iowa State campus. Above the dormitories are Lake Laverne and the Memorial Student Union. In 1959, the institution's name was changed from Iowa State College to Iowa State University. On the right side of the photograph (the south side of Lincoln Way) can be seen the Wesley Foundation Student Center, the Collegiate Methodist Church and the various buildings making up the campustown shopping area. On the east side of Sheldon Avenue (also, south of Lincoln Way) are the Hy-Vee Store and its parking lot and the Campus Baptist Church. This aerial was taken in preparation for the widening of Lincoln Way from two to four traffic lanes.

The Iowa Highway Commission's aerial photograph of the campustown area of Ames, taken on June 1, 1959. Orientation is looking east with Lincoln Way in the center of the photograph. Iowa State University's campus with the old Clyde Williams Field is seen in the upper left quadrant. The photo was taken several blocks west of Sheldon Avenue. It shows Lincoln Way when it was still two lanes in width. Iowa State College became Iowa State University in 1958. This is one of a series of aerial photographs taken in preparation for the widening of Highway 30 (Lincoln Way) to four lanes.

The Iowa Highway Commission's aerial photograph, taken June 1, 1959, showing Lincoln Way through the center and Franklin Avenue and the U. S. Highway 30 interchange in the immediate foreground, running left to right (or north to south). Orientation of the photograph is east. The area in the upper right hand corner of the photograph is the athletic field for Welch Junior High School (after 1986, Ames Middle School). At the intersection of Lincoln Way and Franklin are two service stations (Dyer's Standard and Alignment Service and Alfred's Service) and the Campus Court Motel. This is one of a series of aerial photographs taken in preparation for the widening of Highway 30 (Lincoln Way) to four lanes.

Aerial, taken June 1, 1959 at 2 p.m.for the Iowa Highway Commission, looking east, with Lincoln Way in the vertical center beginning at a point some blocks west of Franklin Avenue (the north-south street in the horizontal center of the photograph). This was part of a series of aerial photographs which were taken in preparation for the widening of Highway 30 (Lincoln Way) to four lanes. The large field in the bottom right quadrant of the photo is where a shopping center, at 3800 West Lincoln Way, would later be located. The Ames Trailer Park (3621 Lincoln Way) can be seen in the lower left quadrant, north of Lincoln Way. Welch Junior High School's playing field can be seen in the upper right quadrant.

The curve begins on the west side of the North/South Dakota Avenue intersection. This is one of a series of aerials taken in preparation for the widening of Highway 30/Lincoln Way to four lanes. Note the general lack of development in the lower quadrants of the photo.
