Mourners gather at the Cory family cemetery following the funeral of the famous evangelist Billy Sunday's mother, Mary Cory Stowell, on June 28, 1916. Mary Jane Cory Stowell lived from July 25, 1840 to June 25, 1916; Her first husband died during the Civil War while she was carrying Billy. In this photograph, Billy Sunday is next to the fence peering down at the grave. Ed Sunday, Billy's brother, is at his right and other family members and friends are gathered nearby. The cemetery is east of Duff Avenue on the south side of what is now [1996] Highway 30. (See also: 93.499.1-2; 93.500.1-2; 97.526.1-5 and 97.527.1)

The funeral service for evangelist Billy Sunday's mother, Mary Cory, was held on June 28, 1916 at the First Methodist Church in Ames. Here the procession follows Adams Mortuary's horse-drawn hearse through the farmyard south of town toward the Cory family cemetery. Today [2003], the Highway 30 interchange with South Duff Avenue is about where we see this 1916 procession. (See also: 93.499.3-5 and 97.527.2-5)

Headstone of Mary Jane Stowall (1840-1916), the daughter of "Squire" Martin and Mary Ann Cory and the mother of the famous evangelist, Billy Sunday. Mary Jane was known as "Jennie." She had three husbands and four names: Jennie Cory, Jennie Sunday, Jennie Heizer, and Jennie Stowall. She is buried in the Cory Family Cemetery in south Ames.
