"HAMMILL SWATS GYM" was the headline in the Ames Daily Tribune on December 31, 1928. Iowa State College President Raymond Pearson had given high priority to Winifred Tilden's plan for up-to-date physical education facilities for women, only to have Iowa Governor John Hammill intervene by striking her request from the college's budget.
