Ames High School when newly built in 1912. A three-story structure on the east side of Clark Avenue, this building was used first as a high school; then as Central Junior High School after the new high school was opened in the fall of 1939 on the west side of Clark (after 1990, the west building became the Ames City Hall); and finally, after a new building was opened as Ames High School in the fall of 1961 at 20th and Ridgewood and the 1937/39 building became Central, as a secondary classroom building for the junior high. The inset in the corners of the building on the north and south, as shown in this photograph, were changed in the 1920s when the building was enlarged. This building was razed on August 22, 1981 and the site is now [2004] a parking lot for City Hall. (See also: 106.581.1)

The entire student body of Ames High School is pictured in this panorama, taken in front of the school when the building was new in 1912. This was the second high school building and was east of the original school on Clark Avenue between Fifth and Sixth streets. The panorama also shows, in the right of the photo, St. John's Episcopal Church's original building on Fifth Street. The original school building, which became the junior high school, can be seen to the left in this photo. The 1912 structure was also used (after 1938) as a junior high. It was razed in 1981 and the area where it stood is now [2011] a parking lot for the Ames City Hall (the 1938 building for Ames High School until 1961 and for Central Junior High from 1961-1986). Close-up of part of panorama (63.320.1-2; 63.321.1-4) showing old Ames High School -- the 1900 addition to the original building which was constructed in 1891-92. More additions to the north (right) can be seen. At this time this building was known as Central School and was an elementary school. North addition housed special education classes. This entire structure was razed in 1937 so that new high school could be built on site.
