This October, 1894, photo shows the Summit Coal Mine three miles northeast of Gilbert the day after a disasterous fire claimed the lives of three men in the mine's shaft. Mining was begun in 1893, after a five-foot vein of coal was discovered, and continued in the area until the late 1920s. (See also: 139.766.1-5)
