Celebrate Geek the Library Week

Whatever you geek, the public library supports you. Join Geek the Library in spreading awareness about the value of libraries and the critical funding issues they face.

 

Ames Public Library will join libraries in central Iowa in celebrating Geek the Library Week March 15-21, 2010. Stop in to the Library or Bookmobile for

  • free goodies
  • a chance to sign the "Geek Wall"
  • an entry to win a T-shirt


Facts About Iowa Libraries

Iowa ranks 11th in the nation in the number of library visits and books
owned per capita.


Spending an average of $31.20 per person, in FY09 Iowa’s public libraries:

  • were open 974,263 hours
  • offered more than 61,000 programs attended by 1,366,582 people
  • served more than 2 million registered borrowers
  • employed 3,237 Iowans
  • spent more than $14.1 million to buy library materials
  • owned more than 13.6 million books and other items

Iowa has 543 public libraries with 21branches. 415 of those serve populations of less than 2,500.


Two-thirds of all Iowans
have active public library cards, a 21% increase from 1999 to 2009.


Public libraries own and maintain 3,817 public access computers.
