A divorced couple learns that the only way to save their daughter, who has leukemia, is to have another child. Now both remarried, they are forced to test their love and commitment by putting their current relationships in danger.

Set in Fo Shan, China, during the Sino-Japanese War, the brutality of the Japanese occupation is brought to life, where once proud men are forced to fight to the death for a precious bag of rice. Upon refusing to teach his martial arts to the invading Japanese soldiers, he must fight for the honor of his country in a series of battles that will culminate in a kill-or-be-killed showdown with Japan's greatest fighter.

A German businessman rescued more than 200,000 Chinese during the Nanking Massacre in China by courageously negotiating a safety zone to protect innocent civilians from the Japanese Army. Drawing from John Rabe's 1937 diaries as source material, Florian Gallenberger has crafted a portrait of a man revered as a saint in China to this day and yet never rewarded for his courage during his lifetime.

Set during the Age of the Warlords in the 1920s, this comic western is the highest grossing Chinese film. When an outlaw impersonates a county governor to clean up a corrupt town, he enters a showdown with the local “godfather.” Full of surprises and grounded with a smart, humorous script, battles are fought with guns and wit.

An-kun is a skyscraper window washer in Beijing and his wife Ping-guo is a masseuse. The parlor is owned by Dong, a rich businessman who epitomizes China's new money-obsessed society. Their worlds collide after Dong forces himself on Ping-guo, while An-kun witnesses everything. An-kun decides to blackmail Dong. He must either pay or be charged for rape. When Ping-guo learns that she's pregnant, the stakes get even higher.

A heartbroken sound technician can't get over the girl who left him without a word, so he sends her a tape. Ryo, a girl involved with a married man, gets the tape by accident and tracks down the sender. Will these three lonely souls eventually find the place that is closest to their hearts?

Beijing journalist Ga Yu arrives in a Tibetan village. He joins a manhunt across the wastelands of Kekexili. Acting without Chinese government approval, the impoverished vigilantes vow to capture or kill the poachers who decimated the sacred antelope of Kekexili.

Nanking (951 DVD NAN)  In Chinese, Japanese, or English, with English captions.  90 min.  2007. 

The Japanese invaded Nanking, China in the early days of World War II. This film focuses on the efforts of a small group of unarmed Westerners who established a Safety Zone where over 200,000 Chinese found refuge. It is told through deeply moving interviews with Chinese survivors, archival footage, and chilling testimonies of Japanese soldiers, interwoven with staged readings of the Westerners' letters and diaries.

New Year Sacrifice (DVD FOREIGN NEW)  In Mandarin with English captions.  100 min.  2004. 

A young woman, twice widowed, is seen as a bearer of bad luck. She becomes a social outcast. Based on a short story by Lu Xun, this was one of Asia Weekly’s top 100 Chinese films of all time.

Not One Less (DVD FOREIGN NOT)  In Mandarin with English captions.  106 min.  1999. 

A young woman comes to a remote Chinese village to be a substitute teacher. Barely older than her students, the shy girl is charged with keeping the class intact for one month or she won't be paid. When one of her students disappears into the city to find work, the stubborn teacher is determined to follow the boy and bring him back to school. Once in the city, her simple peasant pleas fall on deaf ears, and only when the manager of the local television station sympathizes does her search bear fruit.

Reality and fantasy merge as Lin tries to rekindle Sun's affections under Nie's grudging watch. With song and dance sequences and sumptuous images, this film weaves a tale of bittersweet love.

Platform (DVD FOREIGN PLA)  In Mandarin with English captions.  148 min.  2000. 

This film spans the turbulent 1980s by following four performers in the state-run Peasant Culture Group. Based in Fenyang, these "art workers" praise the late Chairman Mao with approved revolutionary classics. When an "open door" cultural policy is instituted, China begins to move toward Western-influenced consumer capitalism.

Quitting (DVD FOREIGN QUI)  In Mandarin, with English or Spanish captions.  112 min.  2001. 

Based on a true story, using real people, this film chronicles a Chinese actor's battle against heroin addiction.
