December Kisses (DVD FOREIGN DEC)  88 min.  2002. 

Freddy is a desperate man on the lam, taken in by Thomas, a kindhearted clergyman.  Freddy is secretly nursed back to health in the bell tower of Thomas's church by the priest’s daughter, who is drawn to him.  While Thomas fends off investigators, a burgeoning relationship grows in the tower.  When his daughter plans to leave with Freddy once he is recovered, Thomas confronts his own beliefs.  Does his compassion for his friend extend to his own daughter's love?

Diary of a Lost Girl (DVD FOREIGN DIA)  Silent film with musical score and English captions.  134 min.  1929. 

The innocent daughter of a prosperous pharmacist is raped by her father’s assistant.  She becomes pregnant, is rejected by her family, and must fend for herself in a harsh, cruel world.

Downfall (DVD FOREIGN DOW)  155 min.  2004. 

The setting is Hitler's bunker, in 1945, during the brutal last days of the Third Reich.  Seen through the eyes of Hitler's secretary, Traudl Junge, optimism crumbles into grim realization and terror as Germany's defeat is inevitable.  As the Russian army circles the city, the dimly lit halls of the underground refuge become an execution chamber for the Fuhrer and his closest advisors.

Dresden (DVD FOREIGN DRE)  180 min.  2006. 

A German hospital nurse finds an injured English pilot hiding in a cellar and helps him, thinking he is a German deserter.  When she finds out who he is, will she have the heart to turn him in?  Or will her feelings overcome border lines and sides?

Edge of Heaven (DVD FOREIGN EDG)  116 min.  2007 

Six characters are drawn together by circumstances: an old man and a prostitute forging a partnership, a young scholar reconciling his past, two young women falling in love, and a mother putting the shattered pieces of her life back together.

Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (DVD FOREIGN ENI)  109 min.  1975. 

Based on a historical event, this is the story of Kaspar Hauser, a young man who appeared in a small German town in 1820 after living in total isolation from humans since birth.  He learns to speak, read, and write, but is then mysteriously murdered.

Europa (DVD FOREIGN EUR)  107 min.  1991. 

An American finds a job as a sleeping car conductor on a train in postwar Frankfurt.

Europa Europa (DVD FOREIGN EUR)  114 min.  1991. 

This movie is based on the true story of a Jewish teenager who survived World War II by living as a Nazi for seven years.

Everyone Else (DVD FOREIGN EVE)   124 min.  2009. 

A young couple's relationship is pushed to the brink while vacationing in the Mediterranean. On the surface, Chris and Gitti appear blissfully in love while enjoying the sun and sand of Sardinia. But as they spend more time together, their silly games and playful teasing begin to unmask hidden fears and desires. When they accidentally run into another, seemingly happier and more successful couple, the tensions between them erupt.

Faraway, So Close (DVD FOREIGN FAR)  146 min.  1993. 

In this sequel to Wings of Desire, an angel dares to cross the line into the harsh reality of post-Cold War Berlin.  He engages in deadly combat to protect the mortals he loves.

Faust (DVD FOREIGN FAU)  Silent film with musical score and English captions.   106 min.  1926. 

F. W. Murnau directed this silent masterpiece based on the play by Johann Wolfgang Goethe.  Dr. Faust sells his soul to Mephistopheles in exchange for scientific knowledge and perfect happiness.  Score compiled from historic photoplay music by the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra.

Fitzcarraldo (DVD FOREIGN FIT)  157 min.  1982. 

A man is obsessed with the ambition to make his fortune and build his own personal opera house in the jungle.

Gloomy Sunday (DVD FOREIGN GLO)  114 min.  1999. 

Set in Budapest in the thirties, two men desire the same woman.  The restaurant owner Laszlo hires the pianist András to play in his restaurant.  Both men fall in love with the beautiful waitress Ilona, who inspires András to write his only composition.

Good-bye Lenin! (DVD FOREIGN GOO)  121 min.  2003. 

Alex's proud, socialist mother falls into a coma for eight months.  When she wakes, her heart is weak, so Alex has to keep the secret that the Berlin Wall has fallen and capitalism has triumphed.  What begins as a little white lie turns into a major scam.

The Hands of Orlac (DVD FOREIGN HAN)   Silent film with musical score and English captions.   110 min.  1924. 

Charts the mental disintegration of a concert pianist whose hands are amputated after a train crash, and replaced with the hands of an executed murderer. When Orlac's father is murdered by the dead man's hands, Orlac begins a descent toward madness.

The Harmonists (DVD FOREIGN HAR)  115 min.  1997. 

Based on a true story, this tells of a German vocal group that disbanded in 1934 as Jewish persecution mounted.  They did comic and romantic songs in intricate harmony and were extremely popular, but as the Nazi power rose, they were forbidden to sing songs by Jewish composers - and finally, because three of them were Jewish, they were banned from performing in public.

Head-On (DVD FOREIGN HEA)  118 min.  2004. 

Two young Turkish-Germans are forced into a marriage of convenience which ultimately blossoms into a bond of mutual admiration.

Heart of Glass (DVD FOREIGN HEA)  94 min.  1974. 

A German village looses the secret of making its unique ruby glass.  The townspeople turn to madness, murder, and magic in an effort to recover the lost ingredient.  During filming, the cast was hypnotized to convey hallucination, prophecy, and visions.

Heimat: A Chronicle of  Germany (DVD FOREIGN HEI)  925 min.  1984. 

The incredible saga of a German family from the end of World War I to 1982 - an immersion in the lives, loves, and tragedies of the extended Simon family.

Heimat  2: Chronicle of a Generation (DVD FOREIGN HEI)  1580 min.  1992. 

Filmmaker Edgar Reitz's saga chronicles one German family from 1919 to 1982. In part two, set in the 1960s, a native son studies music in Munich.

Heimat 3: A Chronicle of Endings/Beginnings (DVD FOREIGN HEI)  680 min.  2004. 

Hermann and Clarissa, the star-crossed lovers of Heimat 2 meet in a hotel on the evening of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Caught up in the euphoria over the reunification of their country, the couple reunites as well.
