Schultze Gets the Blues (DVD FOREIGN SCH)  109 min.  2003. 

Schultze is a recently retired miner who, like his father, entertains polka audiences with his accordion.  When he discovers the energy of zydeco music on his radio, the monotony of his routine takes a spicy turn.  Schultze learns to play his accordion with a new snap and style.  His fascination ultimately leads him on a life-changing journey to the Louisiana delta.

The true story of Germany's famous anti-Nazi heroine, Sophie Scholl, of the underground student resistance group, The White Rose.  The last six days of Sophie Scholl's life is dramatized, from arrest to interrogation, trial, and sentence in 1943 Munich.  Unwavering in her convictions and loyalty, her cross-examination by the Gestapo quickly escalates into a searing test of wills as Scholl delivers a passionate call to freedom and personal responsibility.

When Zinos hires a gourmet chef for his struggling restaurant, it drives away his low-life regulars. In the meantime, his girlfriend, Nadine, moves back to China, but a hip new clientele brings the restaurant back to life. When he goes to China to get Nadine back, he leaves the restaurant in the hands of his criminal brother. When Zinos discovers that Nadine has a new boyfriend, and his brother has gambled away his restaurant, he knows he must work with his brother if he is to get it back.

Stronger Than Blood (DVD FOREIGN STR)  110 min.  2010. 

Tommy and Sule are like brothers. Through their short lives of 19 years, their friendship has become bulletproof. Their gang is their family, and they live life like there's no tomorrow. They dream of opening an auto body shop together, but Tommy gets caught up in a botched drug deal and is sent to a juvenile prison. When he is released six months later, Tommy wants to clean up his life and is desperate to find out who snitched on him. It's easier said than done.

At age three, Oskar Matzerath decides to stop growing.  For two decades, during the Nazi reign, he remains frozen in size, suspended in the outraged innocence of childhood.  Oskar has two weapons to see him through:  his tin drum, which he bangs to drown out horror and hypocrisy, and his childish voice, which he raises in a shriek that can break glass.

The Unknown Soldier (DVD FOREIGN UNK)  97 min.  2007. 

The crimes against humanity committed by the Nazi regime are often thought of as the work directed by leaders such as Himmler or Hitler.  "Ordinary" German soldiers are not often seen as anything other than their pawns.  Until now.  This movie documents Germany's controversial Wehrmacht Exhibition, which for the first time ever reveals the personal letters, photographs and film footage implicating the common soldier of horrific acts.

Vision – From the Life of Hildegard von Bingen (DVD FOREIGN VIS)  100 min.  2009. 

Hildegard von Bingen was truly a woman ahead of her time. A visionary in every sense of the word, this famed 12th century Benedictine nun was a Christian mystic, composer, philosopher, playwright, poet, naturalist, scientist, physician, herbalist and ecological activist. Hildegard is determined to expand the responsibilities of women within the order, even as she fends off outrage from some in the Church over the visions she claims to receive from God.

When Antoinetta runs off with her boyfriend, her older sister Francesca sets out on a journey to find her. But before the two can be reunited, Francesca crosses paths with Gerlinde, a heartbroken stranger desperate to leave behind her past.

The Wave (DVD FOREIGN WAV)  107 min.  2008. 

During project week, a popular and unorthodox high school teacher, in an attempt to stir up his lethargic students, devises an experiment that will explain what totalitarianism is and how it works. What begins with harmless notions about discipline and community builds into a real movement: the Wave. The teacher decides to break off the experiment. But it may be too late; the Wave has taken on a life of its own and is out of control.

What You Don’t See (DVD FOREIGN WHA)  89 min.  2009. 

Anton arrives at a summer house with his mother and her new boyfriend, on a seemingly innocent mini-vacation. As Anton explores the new environment, he meets Katja and David, who seemingly live alone in a neighboring house. Gradually and unsuspectingly, they draw Anton into a dangerous vortex of emotional confusion, where sexual overtures, subtle seduction, and surprising violence all play a part. Anton finds himself on the other side of an appalling reality he could not have imagined.

When We Leave (DVD FOREIGN)  115 min.  2010. 

A German-born woman flees from her oppressive marriage in Istanbul, taking her son with her. She hopes to find a better life with her family in Berlin, but her unexpected arrival creates intense conflicts. Her family is trapped in their conventions. They are torn between their love for her, and the traditional values of their community.

White Ribbon (DVD FOREIGN WHI)  144 min.  2009. 

In a north German village prior to the outbreak of World War I, strange events, accidents, and deaths are occurring. The citizens are beside themselves with worry and confusion. After the school teacher starts to unravel the mystery, he discovers that the children of the town may be guilty of the crimes and have formed a secret society that the local pastor's daughter appears to lead.

Wings of Desire (DVD FOREIGN WIN)  In German or English with English, French, or Spanish captions.  128 min.  1987. 

This is a romantic fantasy about an angel who wishes he were mortal and is willing to fall from the sky for a chance to fall in love.  It is based on poems by Rainer Maria Rilke.

A Woman in Berlin (DVD FOREIGN WOM)  127 min.  2009.

Women become the victim of the Red Army invasion of Berlin in 1945.  One of them, Anonyma, an educated woman, decides to look for an officer who can protect her.  A complex symbiotic relationship develops between her and the Russian officer Andrej that will force them to remain enemies until the bitter end.

The World is Big and Salvation Lurks Around the Corner (DVD FOREIGN WOR)  110 min.  2008.

After surviving a horrific car accident a young man can't even remember his own name. In an attempt to cure him from his amnesia, his quirky grandfather travels to Germany and organizes a spiritual journey for his grandson, back to the country of his birth. While traveling with his grandfather across time and place on a tandem bicycle, the young man begins to reconnect with his forgotten past.

Young Goethe in Love (DVD FOREIGN YOU)  102 min.  2010. 

Germany 1772: the young Johann Goethe aspires to be a poet, but after failing his law exams, his father sends him to a sleepy provincial court to mend his ways. Unsure of his talent and eager to prove himself, Goethe soon wins the praise and friendship of his superior Kestner. But then Lotte enters his life and nothing is the same as before. However, the young lovers are unaware that her father has already promised Lotte's hand to another man.
