This cinematic genre incorporates a number of sub-genres and repeated themes, including—but not limited to—slashers, vampires, zombies, demonic possession and Satanism, evil children, cannibalism, werewolves, animals attacking humans, inanimate objects brought to life by bane enchantment or twisted science, and haunted houses.
The Amityville Horror (DVD SCI-FI AMI) 119 min. 1979.
Based on a true story that was claimed by writer Jay Anson, The Amityville Horror, is about a large house on the coast of Long Island. George and Kathy Lutz and their three children have moved into what they hope will be their dream house. Instead, they are subjected to the horrors of a murderous presence. Re-made in 2005 (85 min.).
An American Werewolf in London (DVD SCI-FI AME) 98 min. 1981.
Two American students on a walking tour of England are attacked by a werewolf, and one is killed. The survivor has nightmares in which his dead friend and other recent victims demand that he find a way to die to release them from their curse. Laced with dry humor and a great soundtrack, this is a modern horror classic.
The Birds (VIDEO SCI-FI BIR) 120 min. 1963.
In this Alfred Hitchcock classic, a wealthy San Francisco playgirl (Tippi Hedren) pursues a potential boyfriend (Rod Taylor) to a small California town, where birds of all kinds begin to attack the town’s people with both increasing numbers and viciousness.
Blade (VIDEO SCI-FI BLA) 91 min. 1998.
Wesley Snipes stars as a half-vampire, half-mortal man who protects the mortal race and slays evil vampires. His mother was bitten by a vampire during her pregnancy, thus bequeathing to her son a special gift: all the good vampire attributes in combination with the best human skills. The movie is based on characters created by Marvel comics.
The Blair Witch Project (DVD SCI-FI BLA) 87 min. 1999.
Three film students travel to Maryland to make a film about a local urban legend, the Blair Witch. They go into the woods on a two-day hike to find the Blair Witch and never return. A year later, the students’ film is found in the woods. Supposedly, the footage was then compiled and made into this movie.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula (DVD SCI-FI BRA) 130 min. 1992.
This movie is based on Bram Stoker's novel. A lawyer is assigned to a gloomy village in Eastern Europe. He is captured by the vampire Dracula, who travels to London, inspired by a photograph of his betrothed, Mina Murray. In Britain, Dracula begins a reign of terror until Van Helsing arrives to save the day.
