Bandit Queen (DVD FOREIGN BAN)  119 min.  1994. 

Based on the book India’s Bandit Queen, by Mala Sen. Phoolan Devi was a murderer and a kidnapper who endured rape and abuse after being sold into marriage at age eleven. She committed a murder spree, the Behmai Massacre, to avenge the death of her lover and was sought by police from 1983-1994. She was persecuted by the Indian police, but made into a legend by the Indian media. This shocking true story brought the Indian government to its knees.

Bhagat Singh (DVD FOREIGN BHA)  176 min.  2000. 

The freedom fighter Bhagat Singh threw a bomb in the central assembly in defiance o  the British. Executed in 1931, he represented the spirit of revolt in the youth.

Black (DVD FOREIGN BLA)  123 min.  2005. 

Michelle McNally can neither see, hear, nor speak. She inhabits a black world where nothing reaches her and she reaches nothing. Only the power of her rage keeps her afloat. Into this isolation enters a teacher, Debraj Sahai, who leads this wild child into the light of knowledge.

Bombay (DVD FOREIGN BOM)  Dubbed in Hindi from the original Tamil with English or Japanese captions.  130 min.  1995. 

Based on true incidents, this film personifies Hindu-Muslim tensions with the story of a romance between a south Indian Hindu man and a Muslim woman. They marry against family wishes and move to Bombay. The rest of the film is set in the December 1992-January 1993 period when the Ram Janmabhoomi-Barbri Masjid controversy sparked riots and violence.

Chess Players [Shatranj Ke Khilari] (DVD FOREIGN CHE)  In Hindi, Urdu and English.  115 min.  1977.  

This drama is about colonialism and indigenous culture, set in 1856 at the court of Wajid Ali Shah in Lucknow, the capital of Oudh. There are two parallel narratives. The first shows rich landowners Meer and Mirza pouring their passion into a never-ending game of chess. Without thinking of their responsibilities to their families and the political uprising, the two men keep playing. The second narrative dramatizes the conflict between Wajid Ali Shah and General James Outram, who represents Lord Dalhousie's treacherously implemented annexation policies. Wajid Ali is shown as a politically weak figure who surrenders to the British without a fight.

Chori Chori [Hush Hush] (DVD FOREIGN CHO)  144 min.  1956. 

Kammo runs away and meets a journalist who wins her heart when her father opposes her marriage to Sumant. Her father offers a reward for her return and arranges her marriage to Sumant, unaware she loves the journalist.

Dhoom (DVD FOREIGN DHO)  123 min.  2004. 

A gang of robbers sweeps the city on their fast bikes. A police officer and a garage mechanic, who is a bike rider, team up to bring them to justice.

Dhoom 2: Back in Action (DVD FOREIGN DHO)  In Hindi, Tamil, or Telugu, with captions in English, Arabic, Dutch, French, Kannada, Malayalam, Portuguese, or Spanish.  147 min.  2006. 

In this action comedy, three cops are caught in a global game of cat and mouse with two of the most notorious, high-tech thieves.

Dil Chahta Hai [My Heart’s Desire] (DVD FOREIGN DIL)  185 min.  2001. 

The story of three men who have been friends since childhood, their individual relationships, and the effect that these relationships have on them.

Dil Se [From the Heart] (DVD FOREIGN DIL)  156 min.  1998. 

A young man meets an enigmatic girl who later seeks his help without revealing that she is part of a terrorist organization.

Dilwale Dulhania le Jayenge [Romancing the Bride] (DVD FOREIGN DIL)  189 min.  1995. 

Rahul and Simran fall in love while traveling in Europe on a railroad holiday. Simran’s father, settled in London for twenty-two years, is determined that his daughter should marry a family friend back in their ancestral home in rural Punjab. All his plans undergo serious revision once the family travels to India and Rahul also shows up.
