It explores networking and power play between the air-kissing, champagne-swilling celebrities and the media, all through the eyes of an entertainment journalist, Madhavi Sharma, played by Konkana Sensharma, winner of the National award for the film Mr. & Mrs. Iyer.

In this folktale, a new bride’s husband leaves for a five-year business trip on their wedding night. A ghost falls in love with her, assumes the appearance of her husband, and becomes her lover. M. M. Kreem’s music, the melding of Rajasthani instruments and a dancehall beat, costume and set design, and a camel race make this a lively film.

Pakeezah (DVD FOREIGN PAK)  148 min.  1971. 

For her to fall in love was forbidden, but she preferred to die a thousand deaths than to live as a body without a soul.

Parineeta [The Married Woman] (DVD FOREIGN PAR)  127 min.  2005. 

They fell in love before they knew what the word meant—Lolita, orphaned at an early age and Shekhar, who offers her friendship. It takes the arrival of an outsider, Girish, for them to discover that there is something between them.

Pather Panchali [Song of the Little Road] (DVD FOREIGN PAT)  In Bengali with English captions.  113 min.  1955. 

The first of the Apu Trilogy, directed by Satyajit Ray, is the story of a rural family with bad luck. The father is a dreamer and a poet, while his wife struggles to feed the family. The family includes son Apu and his sister who brings tragedy in a moment of carelessness.

Provoked: A True Story (DVD FOREIGN PRO)  In English and some Panjabi; with English captions.  109 min.  2006. 

Unable to bear the brutality and repeated rapes by her alcoholic husband, Kiranjit Ahluwalia, a Punjabi housewife and mother of two in London, sets him on fire and kills him. Charged with first-degree murder, she is sentenced to life imprisonment, where she befriends her cell mate. Moved by her story, the cell mate asks her step-brother, a highly respected queen's counsel, to file her appeal.

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (DVD FOREIGN RAB)  In Hindi with optional English, Arabic, Dutch, Telugu or Tamil subtitles.  167 min.  2009. 

Surinder Sahni , a simple, honest man working for Punjab Power, is leading a humdrum life until he meets his total opposite and finds love in the flamboyant Taani − for whom the world is her canvas as she paints life with the colors of rainbow − until circumstances change it and bring them together.

Rang De Basanti (DVD FOREIGN RAN)  In Hindi and English, with optional English or Arabic subtitles.  171 min.  2006.  

This is the story about the youth of India today. A London-based film-maker discovers the diaries of her grandfather, who served in the British police in India. She plans to shoot a film based on the diaries and casts a group of friends to play the roles of the revolutionaries. The friends cannot identify with the characters and would rather enjoy life than get involved in a project that seems like textbooks.

Rangeela [Colorful] (DVD FOREIGN RAN)  175 min.  1995. 

Mili is a middle-class woman who wishes to be an actress. Munna is an orphan who loves Mili. However, the famous actor Rajkamal discovers Mili and signs her for his next movie. Mili becomes a big movie star. Munna leaves town because he does not want to come between Mili and Rajkamal. Rajkamal falls in love with Mili, but Mili realizes she really loves Munna.

Rudaali [The Mourner] (DVD FOREIGN RUD)  126 min.  1992. 

In a social drama emphasizing conventions of social roles and narrative development through conflicts and cathartic resolution, a woman becomes a professional mourner.
