Kadosh (DVD FOREIGN KAD)  117 min.  1999. 

Set in the Mea Sherim quarter of Jerusalem, the ultra-orthodox Kadosh explores a hermetic world almost never seen on the screen. For ten years the pious Rivka has devoted herself to her husband Meir, but their marriage is childless. Presumed barren, she is rejected in her community, which prizes children. The story relates the fate of Rivka and her sister Malka—in love with a man who fled the community to lead a secular life. An Amos Gitai film.

Kippur (DVD FOREIGN KIP)  123 min.  2000. 

The film takes place during a day in 1973 during the Yom Kippur War in which Egypt and Syria launched attacks in Sinai and the Golan Heights. The day begins with quiet city streets, but ends with death and devastation of both body and mind.

Late Marriage [Hatuna Meuheret] (DVD FOREIGN LAT)  In Hebrew and Georgian, with English captions.  100 min.  2001. 

Zaza is a 32-year-old Israeli bachelor, and his family wants to see him married. Tradition dictates that Zaza has to choose a young virgin. She must be beautiful and from a good family, preferably rich. Zaza’s parents drag him to meet potential brides and their families. He plays along with the family, advocates of the suffocating traditions of their Georgian Jewish heritage. Zaza always manages to get out of being engaged. His parents don’t know that Zaza is already in love. Judith is sensuous, strong, and intriguing – and a divorcee with a 6-year-old daughter. Zaza has kept Judith a secret from his family, and he must choose between respect for tradition and the love of his life.

Lebanon (DVD FOREIGN LEB)  91 min.  2010. 

Hard-hitting film about the Lebanon war. It is based on a true story about a crew within a tank.

Lemon Tree (DVD FOREIGN LEM)  106 min.  2008. 

A drama based on the true story of a Palestinian widow who must defend her lemon tree field when a new Israeli Defense Minister moves next to her and threatens to have her lemon grove torn down. Hiam Abbass won the Israeli Academy Award as Best Actress.

Live and Become (DVD FOREIGN LIV)  In French, Hebrew, and Amharic with English captions.  140 min.  2008. 

A young boy who isn't an orphan is transported away from his home at a Sudanese refugee camp during “Operation Moses” (1984 airlift of Ethiopian Jews to Israel) in order to honor his mother's wishes of finding a better and safer life.

My Father My Lord (DVD FOREIGN MY)  72 min.  2007. 

A woman is caught in the middle of the struggle between her husband, a respected rabbi, and her son, who is questioning his religion. A holiday meant to help the family reconnect is brought to a dramatic and tragic climax.

Newland (DVD FOREIGN NEW)  In Hebrew and Polish, with English captions.  107 min.  1994. 

Leaving the devastation of WWII behind, a girl and her brother travel from Europe to Israel in search of family, hope, and future. Placed in a refugee camp upon arrival, they are confronted by a world of colorful characters that terrifies and tantalizes them as they face the difficult realities of a new land.

Nina’s Tragedies [Ha-Asonot Shel Nina] (DVD FOREIGN NIN)  106 min.  2003. 

Award-winning writer/director Savi Gabizon’s look at a young teenager’s coming-of-age and his attraction to his beautiful but emotionally fragile Aunt Nina.

No Longer 17 [Lo Bat 17] (DVD FOREIGN NO)  In Hebrew with English, French, or Hebrew captions.  97 min.  2003. 

This sequel to Noa at 17 follows up the characters and issues of the first movie. The kibbutz where Noa grew up is no longer the pinnacle of idealism and optimism it once was, and Israel has undergone serious changes.

Noa at 17 (DVD FOREIGN NOA)  86 min.  1982. 

Projects the tension of Israeli society in the 1950s, unfolding against the background of ideological changes of the era. Noa, the daughter of a family caught up in this process, is an individualist who challenges the collective ethos of her comrades.

Nymphs in the Mist (DVD FOREIGN MIS)  81 min.  2010. 

After his girlfriend dumps him, Yaniv sinks into a funk. At the suggestion of his best friend, he decides to make a movie in order to meet some of Tel Aviv's most beautiful women. But he realizes once making the movie how much he misses his ex-girlfriend.

Or (DVD FOREIGN OR)  100 min.  2004. 

Or has a part-time job at a restaurant, but her full-time job is taking care of her mother whose survival skills have deteriorated after years of prostitution. Now Or must decide if she wants to keep caring for her mother or have a life of her own.

Out of the Blue (DVD FOREIGN OUT)  91 min.  2010. 

A dramatic comedy about failed loves and the friendships that survive them. It's a Cinderella story in reverse, with two grungy guys seeking their 'princess' and a beat-up table substituting for the famed glass slipper.

Over the Ocean (DVD FOREIGN OVE)  89 min.  1991. 

Set in 1962 and told from the perspective of a 10-year-old boy whose parents cannot agree on whether to move to Canada or remain in Israel. Menachem envisions better opportunities in Canada while Rosa perceives the family as too deeply rooted in Israel to move abroad.
