Rex Stout
Rex Stout (1886-1975) started writing romance, adventure, and borderline detective stories in the 1910s for the pulps. His first novel to feature the rotund, agoraphobic, and orchid-growing Nero Wolfe was Fer-de-Lance, serialized in The Saturday Evening Post and published as a book in 1934. After 1938, Stout wrote mysteries. He continued the Wolfe series throughout his life, totaling 33 novels and 39 novellas and short stories.
