The Sacrifice (DVD FOREIGN SAC)  In Swedish with English captions.  145 min. 1986. 

Alexander's birthday party is interrupted by news that World War III has begun and mankind is hours away from annihilation. To avoid war, Alexander promises to God that he'll sacrifice all he has, even his son.

Saraband (DVD FOREIGN SAR)  In Swedish with English captions.  111 min.  2005. 

Johan and Marianne lose touch after their divorce. Years later Marianne looks up Johan and tries to get him out of isolation. Upon her arrival to his home, they spend several intense weeks together. Sequel to Scenes From a Marriage. Ingmar Bergman’s last film.

Sauna (DVD FOREIGN SAU)  In Finnish with English captions.  84 min.  2008. 

Explores the space between Christianity and paganism.  The year is 1595 – a long and brutal war is finally over.  Brothers Knut and Eric, part of a commission marking the border between Finland and Russia, commit a terrible sin as they leave a young girl to die a horrible death.  As the commission crosses an uncharted swamp, the girl returns to haunt them.  Weary men find solace in a nameless village where they find a sauna, a sauna where all sins are washed away.

Sawdust and Tinsel (DVD FOREIGN SAW)  In Swedish with English captions.  92 min.  1953. 

A relationship between a turn-of-the-century traveling circus owner and his performer girlfriend suddenly changes when they pull into town where the owner’s wife and children live, whom he hasn’t seen in three years. Generally considered to be Ingmar Bergman’s first significant film.

Scenes From a Marriage (DVD FOREIGN SCE)  In Swedish with English captions.  468 min.  1974.  

Ingmar Bergman’s intimate, evocatively filmed drama about marital turmoil. DVD includes the U.S. theatrical version and the original 5-hour television version. Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Film of 1975.

The Seagull’s Laughter (DVD FOREIGN SEA)  In Icelandic with English captions.  105 min.  2004.  In 1953,

Freya returns from America to live with distant relatives in a fishing village in Iceland. With her slender figure and chic American fashions, she's a mystery to the women, including 11-year-old Agga, and especially to the men of the community.

The Seventh Seal (DVD FOREIGN SEV)  In Swedish with English captions or dubbed in English.  96 min.  1957.  

This is the story of a 14th century knight returning home from the Crusades. He encounters Death, who challenges him to a chess game. The lives of the knight and a group of traveling players hang in the balance. For many viewers, this is Ingmar Bergman’s masterpiece.

Shame (DVD FOREIGN SHA)  In Swedish with English captions.  103 min.  1968. 

A young married couple struggles to hold onto their love and their lives during a raging civil war in this Ingmar Bergman film.

The Silence (DVD FOREIGN SIL)  In Swedish with English captions.  95 min.  1963. 

Traveling home by train through a country seemingly on the brink of war, two sisters – the sickly, intellectual Ester and the sensual, pragmatic Anna – along with Anna’s young son, Johan, are forced to disembark in an unknown city in order for Ester to rest. Attempting to cope with their alien surroundings, the sisters resort to their personal vices while vying for Johan’s affection, and in so doing sabotage what little remains of their ambiguous relationship. The final film in Ingmar Bergman’s “Faith” trilogy.

Smiles of a Summer Night (DVD FOREIGN SMI)  In Swedish with English captions.  108 min.  1957. 

Eight characters become four couples while vacationing at a country estate. This Ingmar Bergman comedy inspired the Broadway hit “A Little Night Music,” and won the Cannes Film Festival grand prize for best comedy.

A Somewhat Gentle Man (DVD FOREIGN SOM)  In Norwegian with English captions.  103 min.  2010. 

Ulrik is a somewhat gentle man, as far as gangsters go. Reluctantly back on the streets following a stint in prison, Ulrik's boss greets him with open arms and a plan to settle an old score. With a demented sense of professional pride, Ulrik's boss sets in motion a plan to right the wrong done to his star employee. The problem is Ulrik would rather go about his own business, however mundane, than get involved with his ragtag colleagues again.

Song for Martin (DVD FOREIGN SON)  In Swedish with English captions.  113 min.  2001. 

Two soul-mates meet, their passion fueled by their love of music. Martin is a composer-conductor and Barbara is a violinist. When their bliss is threatened by Martin’s illness, Barbara is determined to prove that love conquers all.

Songs From the Second Floor  (DVD FOREIGN SON)  In Swedish with English captions.  94 min.  2000. 

Karl burns down his furniture store in order to get the insurance money. While the new millennium is casting its web and creating a vast mental breakdown, Karl becomes conscious of the absurdity of the world and realizes how difficult it is to be human.

Sound of Noise (DVD FOREIGN SOU)  In Swedish with English captions. 

Police officer Amadeus Warnebring, tone-deaf scion of a distinguished musical family, attempts to track down a group of six guerilla percussionists, whose anarchic public performances are terrorizing the city at civic and cultural institutions, using standard apartment furnishings as their instruments.

Submarino (DVD FOREIGN SUB)  In Danish with English captions  110 min.  2010. 

After surviving a childhood plagued by violence and despair, two estranged brothers, one a hardened criminal, the other an addict, find their lives haunted in different ways.

Summer Interlude (DVD FOREIGN SUM)  In English with Swedish captions.  96 min.  1951. 

Directed by Ingmar Bergman.  Marie is an accomplished ballet dancer haunted by her tragic youthful affair with a shy, handsome student. Her memories of the rocky shores of Stockholm's outer archipelago mingle with scenes from her gloomy present, most of them set in the dark backstage environs of the theater where she works.

Summer with Monika (DVD FOREIGN SUM)  In English with Swedish captions.  96 min.  1953. 

Directed by Ingmar Bergman.  In Stockholm, a girl and boy from working-class families run away from home to spend a secluded, romantic summer at the beach, far from parents and responsibilities. Inevitably, it is not long before the pair is forced to return to reality. .

The Swimsuit Issue (DVD FOREIGN SWI)  In English with Swedish captions.  100 min.  2008. 

Unemployed, divorced, and estranged from his daughter, Frederik is stuck in Loserville with no hope of getting back on the right track.  His luck changes when a botched prank gives him the idea to mold his motley buddies into Sweden’s only male synchronized swimming team, with the World Cup finals in Berlin as the seemingly unattainable goal.
