Terribly Happy (DVD FOREIGN TER)  In Danish with English captions.  104 min.  2009. 

Set to take up the mysteriously vacated job of town marshal, Robert quickly finds himself mixed up in a community governed by its own rules. Robert's big-city temperament makes it impossible for him to fit in, or to understand the uncivilized behavior displayed by the townspeople: the sultry blond femme fatale, the ten-gallon hat and bolo-wearing town bully, and the sinister doctor with a penchant for maniacal cackling.

A four-character Ingmar Bergman drama about a just-released mental patient, her husband, her father, and her younger brother, who spend summers together on a secluded island. This is the first in Ingmar Bergman’s "Faith" trilogy, followed by Winter Light and The Silence .  Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film of 1961.

A group of students investigates a series of mysterious bear killings, but learns that there are much more dangerous things going on. They start to follow a mysterious hunter, learning that he is actually a troll hunter.

Under the Sun (DVD FOREIGN UND)  In Swedish with Korean or English captions.  118 min.  2002. 

Olof lives alone on his family's farm after his mother's death. Illiterate, he depends on Erik to help him. Once a sailor, Erik brags of having known many women. Olof advertises for a housekeeper, and Ellen, a middle-class city woman, arrives to take over the house and Olof's heart and Erik's desire, as well.

The Virgin Spring (DVD FOREIGN VIR)  In Swedish with English captions or dubbed in English.  88 min.  1959. 

In this Ingmar Berman film, a devout peasant girl is raped and murdered in 14th century Sweden. When her killers seek shelter from her father, he kills them to avenge her death. A spring appears where the girl was killed, and her father sees this as a sign from above. Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film of 1960.

Middle-aged professor Jon will be getting married to a student half his age in 24 hours, but before he can make it to the ceremony he’ll have to deal with a massive debt to his mother-in-law to be, an extremely drunk best man, the logistics of  a remote Icelandic island, a hostile reverend, and the memory of an emotionally unstable first wife.  Can love survive one last night, or is the road to happiness paved with blissful ignorance?

A professor living with his housekeeper comes to terms with his egocentricity by remembering his youth, reviewing his failure as husband, lover, and father. This Ingmar Bergman film shows the phenomena of age wherein childhood memories return with clarity while those from life’s prime vanish into obscurity.

Winter Light (DVD FOREIGN WIN)  In Swedish with English captions.  80 min.  1962.  

In this stark depiction of spiritual crisis, a small-town pastor performs his duties mechanically before a dwindling congregation. When he is asked to assist a troubled parishioner with his debilitating fear of nuclear annihilation, the pastor is terrified that he can offer nothing but his own uncertainty. Sara is an intelligent and devout 17-year-old Jehovah’s Witness who passionately pursues her religion’s teachings, but when she falls in love with an older boy and non-believer, she is forced to choose between the desire she feels and the faith that forbids it.
