DESCRIPTION: \r\nTopic — Underground Railroad in Iowa\r\nSpeaker —
Allie Shambaugh-Miller\r\nIowa and the Midwest are often left out of narra
tives about the Underground Railroad, yet the state played a central role
in the fight against slavery.\r\nIn this presentation, you will learn abou
t the flight of enslaved African Americans from Missouri and other slave s
tates into abolitionist towns in southern Iowa. From here, many freedom se
ekers traveled north to free states and Canada, although some settled in I
owa cities such as Des Moines for their entire lives.\r\nThe stories of fr
eedom seekers and conductors buried in Woodland Cemetery in Des Moines wil
l further exemplify the role of central Iowa in the Underground Railroad.\
r\n \r\nPARTICIPATE IN PERSON OR ONLINE.\r\nIf you would like to receive
the Zoom link by email please register on this page or call (515) 239-5646
