George Child erected this log cabin, the third building in Nevada, Iowa, for his bride in the fall of 1854. Hauling the walnut logs from Polk County, he built the cabin where Fourth Street and J Avenue intersect. Sometime later the cabin was moved to its present location at Second Street and H Avenue. One of the first merchants in Nevada, Child also served as Story County sheriff and court baliff. Child served as a captain in the Civil War. The Child log house was purchased in 1975 by the Nevada Rotary Club as a bicentennial project. It was presented to the Nevada Community Historical Society in July, 1980.
