All Iowa residents may sign up for an Ames Public Library card. To apply for your card, you will need:
- Photo identification
- Proof of current Iowa address
- Completed registration form or registration online
Individual Account
A single, confidential account for ages 5 and up.
Shared Account
An account shared among multiple people.
Anyone listed on the shared account may see what items are checked out on the account or pick up items being held, regardless of who requested them.
Any member on a shared account may also have an individual account.
Student Account
Ames Community School District students in K-12 are issued an Ames Public Library Student Account electronically.
Student accounts are limited to checkout of 3 physical items at a time.
Students may also have an individual account and/or be a member on a shared account.

Account Notifications
When registering for a library card, you may select how you would like to be notified by us should you put an item on hold.
We offer 3 types of notifications: SMS, email, and phone. You can choose your notification type when you register for your account.
To update your notification option, log into your account using the My Account feature or contact customer account services staff at 515-239-5646 x2 or circ@amespubliclibrary.org.
Messaging Terms and Conditions
- Ames Public Library occasionally contacts registered patrons via SMS or Text Messaging. Personal information will not be shared with third parties for marketing purposes.
- The types of messages the library may send includes but is not limited to customer care/account notifications.
- Message frequency may vary.
- Message and data rates may apply.

- To opt-out, text STOP to cancel, log in to your account to change notice preference, or speak with a staff member.
- Failure to receive a library account notice does not waive patron responsibility for the timely return of library materials.
