W. G. Wright, the first town marshall for Ames, was a hardware dealer in the early days of the town. "Town marshall" was a term that preceded "police chief" and "county sheriff" as a designation for the person in charge of law and order. Wright built the brick house on the southwest corner of Ninth Street and Douglas Avenue.
