LaVerne Noyes, Iowa State College class of 1872, was writing to his father in the 1870's about the frequent flooding of the Squaw Creek bottoms near the campus. In 1914-1915, Noyes, a successful Chicago manufacturer donated the development and landscaping of a pond on the ISC campus. The pond was later designated "Lake LaVerne" in his honor.
