This brick one-room schoolhouse was constructed in 1872 on the property of Henry C. and Amanda J. (Hussong) Cameron in western Story County about a half-mile from their brick home. One of Henry and Amanda's sons owned a brick factory in the vicinity of Ontario, Iowa, (now, part of west Ames) His kiln probably produced the bricks used for both the home and the schoolhouse. The brick school replaced a log school at the same site that had been built in 1854. Henry C. Cameron, a veteran of both the Mexican War and the U.S. Civil War, moved to Story County from Indiana with his wife Amanda in 1852. Amanda Hussong was born in Knox County, Indiana, on November 14, 1826; but, as a small child, moved with her family to Clay County, Indiana. Henry Cameron was born in Marion County, Indiana, on June 22, 1825. Amanda and Henry married on August 12, 1847. The couple bore ten children (two died in infancy) and the original school, no doubt, served their family's educational needs. Henry died on June 16, 1904, at the age of 79; Amanda died in 1919 at the age of 92. The school was located northwest of Ames, on a road about one mile west of the Ames Golf & Country Club. It was in operation from 1872 until around 1950; it was destroyed by fire in 1956. In March, 1989, the road was named Cameron School Road to honor this pioneer family. (See also: ID 86.454.2-5)
