Farwell Brown took this photograph of the Pleasant Grove Church in 1997 to accompany a story he was writing ("With Two Feet in the Grave," in "Ames in Word and Picture, Book Two: Further Tales and Personal Memories," pp.124-125). The non-denominational Christian church was established in 1873. It is on the north side of the county road about two and a half miles east of the Gilbert, Iowa, corner north of Ames, and east of the site of Soper's Mill. The Pleasant Grove Church was active with a small congregation when this photograph was taken and was popular locally for the ice cream social it hosted every summer. Notice the cemetery to the right of the church.
