Harriet West was the wife of William West. Together they ran the West House, Ames's first hotel, which was located where the Octagon Center for the Arts is now [2004] located. The Wests moved to Ames in the 1860s and operated their hotel from 1869 until 1892. In 1895, the elderly couple moved to Rock Rapids, Iowa, in northwest Iowa, to live with one of their sons. For a number of years, various West progeny lived in Ames. One of their daughters was married to Milo Manning. [See also: 160.889.4-5]
