Hattie West was one of the daughters of Harriet and William West, proprietors (1869-1892) of the West House, Ames's first hotel. Her sister Laura was married to M. K. Smith, an early Ames storekeeper (Bigelow & Smith), and her sister Clara was married to Ames's city clerk, Milo A. Manning.
