Ames was never a "one-horse town." Note the parallel parking! Here is Onondaga (Main) Street in the early 1880's, looking east near the Kellogg corner. The New York Store, an early general merchandise store, was a few doors east of Kellogg on the north side of Onondaga. The store was owned by a Mr. Hirsh, a native of New York, and opened for business in the 1870s.
