Henry C. Cameron, a veteran of both the Mexican War and the U.S. Civil War, was born in Marion County (Indiana) on June 22, 1825. He married Amanda J. Hussong in Tennessee in 1847. In 1852, Henry and Amanda moved to Story County where they acquired 160 acres of land from the U.S. government. It was on the Cameron property that a log schoolhouse was built in 1854. It was in use until 1872 when it was replaced by a brick building, located one-half mile from the Camerons' house. In March, 1989, a 2-mile stretch of road that connects county roads R50 and R38 in western Story County was designated the Cameron School Road. Henry died at the age of 79 on June 16, 1904. (For more information about Henry C. Cameron, his family, and the school, see p.1 in the Spring, 1989 issue of "The Ames Intelligencer," the newsletter of the Ames Heritage Association.)
