Martin M. Morrison (1844-1916) was an Ames professional photographer who took many pictures of scenes in Story County. This photo, dated by the sign in the foreground Nov. 18, 1885, is of the campus of Iowa State College. In the foreground is College Creek; a bridge can be seen in the right center of the photo. On the other side of the creek are several academic buildings of the early campus, left-to-right: the Chemical and Physical Laboratory (1870-1913); Main Hall--also known as College Building, the College, and Old Main--(1864-1902); and South Hall (1868-1912). For descriptions of these buildings, see H. Summerfield Day's "The Iowa State University Campus and Its Buildings, 1859-1979," published in 1980 by Iowa State University.
