Andrew James Graves (October 3, 1830-February 7, 1911) was the first official manager of the College Farm at what would become Iowa State College. Graves was born in Sherburne Center, Rutland County, Vermont. He married Mary Matilda Meredith in Cedar Falls, Iowa, in 1858. Mary was born in Highland County, Ohio, and raised in Cedar Falls. Andrew Graves was hired by Peter Melendy, College Farm superintendent and a trustee of the "Iowa Agricultural College." Graves was Melendy's business partner in Cedar Falls. He moved into the Farm House in April, 1864, and held the job of farm manager until April, 1868. He and Mary and their family then moved to their own farm in Story County. Graves founded the Ames Savings Bank on Onondaga (Main) Street in downtown Ames in 1903 and served as its president until his death in 1911. [For further information about A. J.
