The home of Captain Wallace M. Greeley and Mary Victoria Greeley, built in 1882. This photo is from the souvenir edition of the 1897 "Ames Intelligencer." The home is on the northeast corner of Fifth Street and Douglas Avenue. Note the picket fence and the also the barn in the right of the photograph. Most Ames homeowners had shelter for the family horse and often for the family cow. Greeley would have had a fine driving horse and a horse-drawn conveyence in that barn. The house is today (2002) the Adams Funeral Home. This corner was also the site of the first residence built in Ames by Noah Webster. (See also 92.497.3)
