"A picnic of thirteen, in honor of Tot Bigelow, took to the woods last Thursday and...enjoyed themselves after the usual manner of picnic parties." ("Ames Times," Thursday, July 7, 1898). Tot Bigelow is the second from the right in the front row; Ruth Tilden is at the far right in front. The likely cameraman was Ruth's husband Lucian C. (Lou) Tilden. Tot Bigelow was soon to leave for school in New Haven, Connecticut; in later life she was the city treasurer for Puyallup, Washington. Tot was the daughter of D. A. Bigelow, Ames merchant and a one-time business partner of George G. Tilden, Lou's father.
