Josephine Hungerford, age 11, and her 3-year-old brother standing outside the Main Building, known as"Old Main," on the campus of Iowa State College in 1901. Old Main's north wing burned on December 8, 1900. The college had barely recovered from that fire when disaster struck with a second fire on August 14, 1902, which demolished the south wing. That fire put an end to the use of Old Main as a central administration building. The contract for the construction of the new Central Building (afterwards, named Beardshear Hall) was awarded in May of 1903. Josephine Hungerford was born on October 5, 1889, to Mary Maclean and John Boyd Hungerford (ISC, 1877) in Columbus City, Iowa. She received her B.S.in economics from ISC in 1911 and married John Simpson Dodds (ISC, 1912) on October 9, 1913. They had four children. John Dodds later became a professor of civil engineering at Iowa State College. Josephine died on February 4, 1983. This photograph is part of Josephine Hungerford Dodds's collection file in the Iowa State University Archives, Special Collections, Parks Library. (See also: 217.1236.1-2)
