The second school built in Ames, known as South School. Built in 1868 on the site of the later-built Lincoln Building, at 120 South Kellogg. A two-story frame structure, it can be seen in the background of this photo taken sometime between 1902 and 1907. Mearl Brown (1895-1985) attended this school between 1902 and 1906. He may be the third from the left in the back row. Myrtle Lanning is believed to be the teacher at the left; Thyra Hytland (married name: Thyra Gray) is the teacher at the right. South School was sold at auction in 1912 when Lincoln School was built. It was later moved to a site just north of East Lincoln Way (east of the solid waste plant, built in the 1970s) and made into a residence. By 1871-1872, there were about 160 school-age children in the village. Teacher's pay was then less than $10.00 a week. The residence which was once South School was destroyed by fire.(See also: 75.389.1-6)
