Engineering Hall (in 1947, renamed Marston Hall in honor of the first dean of the College of Engineering, Anson Marston). Engineering Hall was built in 1900-1903 (the cornerstone has the date 1901). This is the only building [as of 1980 when H. Summerfield Day compiled his history, "The Iowa State University Campus and Its Buildings, 1859-1979"], on the Iowa State campus for which selection of the architect was by competion--the firm of Proudfoot & Bird being the winner. The new building was occupied in January, 1903, with a formal dedication in the end of May, 1903. The water tank behind the building is the Marston Water Tower, designed by Professor Marston in 1896 and its erection, completed in 1897. The tank was constructed of steel, 24 feet in diameter by 40 feet high, besides the hemispherical bottom. Its capacity was 162,000 gallons. The tank, though no longer in use, still [2004] stands as an historical site.
