South side of Onondaga Street showing Ames Savings Bank (founded in 1903 by Andrew James Graves). Graves came to Ames in 1864 and was the first official manager of the Iowa Agricultural College Farm. He later farmed in Story County. He was president of the bank from its founding until his death in 1911 at the age of 80. The bank was sold around 1913. Graves also founded a fire insurance association and was president of that for awhile. The Subway delicatessen is located [2000] where the bank was. The bank's vault is still intact and is used in the delicatessen as a storage closet.
