The Sigma Nu Fraternity was founded at the Virginia Military Institute on January 1, 1869. The Iowa State College chapter was organized on April 23, 1904. Members of the chapter lived in this house at 905 Douglas Avenue (the original home of George G. and Lydia Cooper Tilden) until about 1913. Shown here in front of the house in about 1908 were members, girl friends, alumni, and their spouses and friends, congregating on the porch during a social event. A number of fraternity and sorority resided in downtown Ames in those days. By 1920, expanding college activities and improved facilities in west Ames found most Greek societies moving to locations near the campus. [See also: 158.875.3 and 225.1295.5]
