This photograph was taken on the occasion of the fiftieth wedding anniversary of Daniel and Mary Ann Ross McCarthy on the front porch of their home on the southwest corner of Grand Avenue and Sixth Street. The picture appeared in "The Ames Intelligencer" on April 30, 1908. This house is now [2003] the home of Shoppes on Grand. Daniel McCarthy was born in Ontario, Canada, on January 11, 1833. He moved to Fairview (now Story City) in Story County in April, 1856. He installed the first steam plant in the county in a sawmill owned by a Mr. House. In 1858, McCarthy married Mary Ann Ross, a daughter of one of his mill patrons. Eventually, McCarthy bought the mill from House and after two years sold it and became a carpenter. During this time he studied for the law and was admitted to the bar in 1870. Mary Ann and Daniel raised eight children (a nineth child, Andrew, died at age 2 and 1/2) in their house at 930 Ash in Ontario (later, west Ames). In 1897, the family moved to the house in this picture at 511 Grand. One of the McCarthys' daughters was Emma (1865-1951; the wife of the prominent Ames judge, C. G.
