Knute Heglund was the night watchman at Iowa State College, a one-man police force. Born in Norway in 1875, he immigrated to the United States at the age of 17. Employed by Iowa State College from 1905 until his death in July of 1946, the short, stocky Heglund was well known to the students, faculty, and staff at Iowa State College as he made his rounds of the campus, checking doors and making sure all was well each night. He was known to greet people he met on his rounds with "Fine night, tonight," no matter what the weather. Heglund lived alone on the top floor of Morrill Hall. It was he who discovered the fire at Margaret Hall on April 8, 1938. Heglund was buried with his dog in the college cemetery (row 14, no. 1). The exact date of this portrait is unknown, but he was obviously a rather young man at the time and his age plus his attire place the date at around 1910.
