One of Story City's first hotels, this structure was originally known as the Nelson House. Later, it acquired the name of Grand Hotel. The hotel boasted steam heat and electric lights. It stood on the west end of the site now occupied by Story City's present (2002) City Hall. The hotel was replaced in 1912-1913 by the new Grand Hotel building complex which ceased operation altogether in 1933.
