The Farmers State Bank in Arlington, Iowa, around the time before World War I when Dr. Gates Brown, uncle of Farwell T. Brown, practiced medicine there. Arlington was at that time a thriving town of about a thousand, but now [2004] has a population of only 465. Several families came from Arlington to become prominent citizens of Ames. Among them were the Engeldingers (Elmer J. Engeldinger came from a bank in Arlington to become president of the Commercial Savings Bank in Ames). For more about Arlington in the early years of the 20th century, see "My Uncle the Doctor," pp. 21-28, in "Ames in Word and Picture; Book Three: Tales From Two Old-Timers," 2003.
