Ames's new post office, built in 1912, was across Kellogg Avenue from the Ames Town Hall (replaced by the Municipal Building in 1915). It is viewed here from its east side. A residence can be seen to the right of the post office across Fifth Street and the old Armory is on south side of the post office. By the mid-1920s, the postal service had to rent added space, seasonally. This building was replaced in 1935 by a building located one block to the north. (See also: 63.319.5 and 82.427.1)
