Ames's Mayor Parley Sheldon is shown laying the cornerstone in the new city hall (the Municipal Building) during the dedication ceremony at the corner of Fifth Street and Kellogg Avenue in this "Ames Weekly Tribune" August 12, 1915 photograph. As Sheldon prepared to lay the cornerstone, one of the workman threw on some mortar and handed the trowel to the mayor. The stone was about to be lowered and Sheldon said, "Just a minute, I want to get this leveled up." "Oh, that won't matter," the workman responded, "we have to set it over again anyway. We always do." "You won't this one," Sheldon uttered with finality, as he carefully laid the mortar so that when the stone was set, "it was laid true to stand for all time." In 1996, the cornstone, with its enclosed time capsule, was opened during the renovation of the Municipal Building. On July 14, 1997, the building was re-dedicated as the headquarters of Youth and Shelter Services.
