Captain Wallace M. Greeley, 1838-1917. He came to Ames in 1866. He founded Ames's first corporate bank in 1881. He was mayor in 1889-1890. He served in the state legislature. Many contributions to the city by the Greeleys include the original site for the public library and the original Mary Greeley Hospital, announced by Captain Greeley on July 29, 1915, as a memorial to his wife Mary, who died in 1914. This 1915 portrait of Wallace hangs today (1991) in the Adams Funeral Home, once the Greeley residence.(See also: 95.511.1, 95.511.5, 95.511.6)
