March 23, 1916 -- Former U. S. President William Howard Taft was a three-day guest on the ISC campus. On Thursday he spoke in the State Gymnasium on "Our World Relations." A special section was reserved for war veterans. Guests included Iowa Governor Clark, members of the Ames Board of Education, and former U. S. Secretary of Agriculture Tama Jim Wilson. On Friday, Taft spoke on "Military and Naval Defenses of the United States" and on Saturday evening he spoke on "The Duties of Citizenship." The reception committee for the visit were: ISC President Pearson; E. W. Valentine president of the Ames Commercial Club, Ames Mayor Parley Sheldon; and ISC Dean C. F. Curtiss. While in Ames, Taft was the guest of President and Mrs. Pearson at the Knoll. (See front page of Ames Weekly Tribune of March 23, 1916.)
